New York’s new Open Culture program starts strong with live open air shows

Arts and cultural foundations and entertainment groups will have the chance for socially distanced shows in approximately 200 streets across all five boroughs.

A new citywide initiative is getting ready to add arts and entertainment to the streets of the New York. The Open Culture scheme will allow for ticketed, socially distanced concerts, performances, workshops, and activities in the streets with a permit. The NYC Mayor’s Office of Citywide Event Coordination and Management states that this program will be active until October 31, 2021.

Eligibility to apply for the permit is open to Arts and Culture Institutions holding documentation or statuses of DCLA (Cultural Institutions Group, Cultural Development Fund Grant Award Letter, Development Fund Notification letter), an applicant or sponsor received funding from a Borough Arts Council in 2019 or 2020 as well as Cultural Venues.

*Your organization may be legible for DCLA CDF Funding with 501(C)(3) Determination, Fiscal 2019 IRS form 990, background materials documenting 2-year track record of cultural activity.

All performances staged under the Open Culture program must follow a strict COVID-19 Safety Plan. For more information from the official NYC Gov. program website, click here.

Almost 200 events have been scheduled so far, with applications to the program only being open since March 1st, 2021. The NYC Gov.’s Open Culture website offers a nifty Public Space Map in their Portal for a visual representation of space availabilities.

Bluebird Theatre Company plans to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to jump back into live theater in a safe way, and welcome audiences to their shows with open arms (remaining 6 feet apart and with masks, of course.)
